At Camp Hill Education we recognise pupls will be working at different levels regardless of Key Stage. Pupils are therefore grouped according to ability, on the basis of previous attainment in Mathematics or through initial assesments. A variety of resources are used to support pupils’ learning. Investigative and practical approaches are used in all groups in order to inspire curiosity, independent learning skills and functional skills.
Higher ability pupils will have access to:
A study four topic areas:
- Number
- Algebra
- Geometry and Measure
- Handling Data
Pupils not yet ready for GCSE can work towards functional skills qualifications
Specialist learning support is given to targeted pupils depending on their status on the SEN/EAL register.
A study to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
- Place value, addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and Division
- Angles
- Fractions
- Sequences
- Percentages and Pie Charts
Higher ability pupils will have access to:
MATHEMATICS – GCSE
What is Studied?
All pupils will continue to study the four main themes which are taught during Key Stage 3 (Number, Algebra, Handling Data, and Shape, Space and Measures).
Using and Applying Mathematics is also a requirement and this will be fully integrated within the four main themes giving pupils the opportunity to link Mathematics to the real world.
What Skills are Developed?
- Numeracy skills along with making real life links
- More reasoning skills which will help you to interpret information in a variety of situations
- Mathematical processing and analysis skills
- Practical and investigative skills will be developed further to the work experienced during Key Stage 3
How will the Course be Structured?
Pupils will be taught a range of modules based on the four main themes, mentioned above. There will be a Mock examination which will help pupils to prepare for their final examinations.
How will Pupils be Assessed?
- There will be two GCSE Mathematics examination papers at the end of the course which will determine the GCSE grade
- One paper will be non-calculator whilst the other paper will allow the use of a calculator
- Each examination paper is worth 50%, so the total marks will determine the final grade.
There is no coursework for GCSE Mathematics.
Pupils not yet ready to take GCSE will have access to:
FUNCTIONAL MATHS
What is Studied?
The aim of these nationally recognised qualifications is to improve pupils overall maths skills. Pupils will gain the practical skills needed to succeed in further learning, employment and the wider society.
What Skills are Developed?
This course will help pupils to understand the maths that is needed to get by in the real world and develop the maths skills that is needed to be able to use on a daily basis. This will include not just the basic numeracy skills but also how to calculate change, work out what bank statements mean, learn about metric units of measurement and many more skills that we all need.
How will the Course be Structured?
Topics covered include:
- Number (whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages)
- Measure
- Shape and space
- Handling data including statistical measures and probability.
How will Pupils be Assessed?
Assessments are flexible and will be undertaken when pupils are ready. For all levels, pupils will need to sit an examination.
